Here big 2.5" shroud I am planning to use on mj 1200 for super wide flow, the prop will be Octura Z55 (~2.2"). I think to make this prop work on 1200 without sacrifying the diameter I will need to reduce the pitch by trimming down the rear side of the blades (see pic of Dumas 3004), make it like an airplane prop, this of course will make the flow gentler. Stay tuned!

Update on my previous noise problems:
I changed my build and used a carbon fiber tube run all the way through the magnet and a staineless steel rod. Now it's very quiet. Has anyone tried the magnet mounts for sale at MJMods? If so, how is it?

This is what happened to my MJ mod has this happen to anyone else?
The impeller broke right through the back of the maxi Jet. It knocked off the backing of the MJ and cracked through the plastic holder that holds the Red and black bushing. I also cant find the o-Ring that came with the Mod is this needed? Im going to use my other MJ with this mod but before I do, has this happen before? what can I do to make sure it does not happen again. I got the large mod with a bigger Prop. I think it was the 1440 but not sure. |

Do what I did in first picture, make the rod stick permanently, you won't need center brace.

So the electronics are still sealed with that thing off?
Would attatching another propeller on that end be an great way to get alternating flow every time the pump turns on and off. One propeller-end is always sucking, the other is pushing.? when the pump runs the opposite way, it would swich directions. Just need to stabilize both ends with another shroud.

I was worried about this exact thing happening. I noticed that the SS rod was spinning the other day. Either the rod is spinning in the black bushing, or the whole bushing is turning which would cause the failure mode you saw. I think it would be a good idea to epoxy the rod into the bushing, and epoxy the bushing into the MJ. Then figure out how long the slip washers mentioned earlier last, and use those between the magnet and the bushing replacing them before they wear away.
I think the props are just too much backwards power and pressure for what the MJ was designed to do. -J |

Personally I have never experienced that problem with any of my mods. For the back nub to wear out and break like that it must have been a tremendous amount of force. I can see it being possible if you had perhaps dropped the MJ once or twice and caused a hairline crack in the back--just enough so to weaken the whole thing. IMO I don't think the backward force from the impeller/propeller is strong enough to break that by itself.
The SS rod shouldn't be spinning at all. I would check to see if it's actually the SS rod or the end cap bushing is spinning. The bushing should fit the MJ pretty snugly and should not be spinning IMO. D. |

I did the mod on a 1200 and its putting out way too much flow what would be the best way to reduce flow? Cut prop down? Of so what's the best way, and would it be stable or cause vibrations?

Either cut down the prop or use a smaller one.
The best way to cut down a prop even IME is by attaching the prop to a drill and let it spin against some sandpaper. D. |

dhnguyen ... the answer to my question is probably somewhere in this thread but figure I'd ask directly instead of hunting for it.. I plan on doing the mod on two MJ1200s for my tank and a fellow local reefer want to make one as well for his - so it'll be a good group build to do.
What are the pros/cons of the drilled hole version for the shroud? Same question for the slotted version like on MJ Mods? I'm interested on the performance aspect - like if one has a great likliehood of causing the 'vortex' and sucking in air over the other design. I have a table saw and should be able to make a jig for the slotting option. Also have a drill with a variety of bits. So the 'manufaturing' aspect may not influence my decision as much as performance. Thanks in advance.

holes:
pros - easy to do cons - cosmetically maybe although personally I don't think there is really any other than personal preference for the look. slots: pros - cosmetic cons - harder to do as they require some tools and a steady hand performance is the same on both |
