Hitchhiker Mantis caught! I.D. anyone?

I didn't have the heart to flush Him after reading up on how to catch him, I continually got more fascinated by them and boy, do They have character!

He now resides in My refugium and I feed Him different stuff 3 times a week.

He is beautiful! Can anyone give me an idea how dangerous he is to other tank mates. He is about 3 1/2 inches long and apple green.

I need to add that He came off some live rock off the coast of Florida.

Thanks!

Gary

Neogonodactylus wennerae is where I would put my money, especially if it is a hitch hiker from Florida live rock.

As with all mantis, they differ as to their danger levels based on personality of the individual mantis.
The most likely suspects for dinner for that particular species would be snails, and small crab, including hermits.

If you ever feel like flushing him again, make a post on here and let people know or give it to your LFS, as I am certain someone would be willing to provide a good home for it.

Congrats on the new mantis!

Thanks, Guys!

I do have a clean up crew (astrea's and Turbos) in the refug with Him. So far He hasn't tagged one that I can tell. I try to keep Him fed. He is getting less and less shy and I have him conditioned that if I flash a light in his hole, he comes part way out to grab the meal from my tweezers. My Wife loves Him because He is so honery.

Will do! Bought some fresh clams and shrimp at the grocery store. I diced them and marinated the pieces in Selcon and have them in the freezer. I guess I will feed Him every other Day.

I'm assuming that's often enough.

Careful not to muck up the water quality. They are hoarders and will stash uneaten food away where is may rot.

Also, being the species He is, He wont eat silversides would He?

They will eat just about any kind of meat. Just cut it up small enough. Obviously don't put a steak in there. I think I fed my peacock about 3-4 times per week.
If it starts to reject the food then a molt may be coming soon. Mine would pig out and then stop eating a couple days before she would seal up the burrow.

It's stomach is very tiny so it doesn't take much to fill it up.

i'd say one mysis a day (the smaller sized mysis), shrimp is their natural food item.

Bad news and I should have seen it coming. Apple, Our beloved Mantis Shrimp that has brought Us much joy and has been with Us over 12 Weeks, fought the current and went through the slit of My refugium into the Protein skimmer chamber, explored the inlet to the powerful inlet of the protein skimmer and into the running needle impeller. My Wife is really sad and I think a little mad at Me. Should have put some mesh there or something. I just didn't think of it. Stupid!

RIP

Gary

That is very thoughtful and thanks for that!

However, my refugium is now doing double duty as a frag/hospital tank and I'm kinda enjoying not fearing putting my hand in there now.

Gary...

I was diving yesterday, and caught six really nice mantis.....some bright red and some bright green just like yours was! They travel well via overnight express mail right to your door!

No worries about putting you hand in the fuge....they don't attack.....much LOL...

Almost free....express mail overnight cost about $35-$50.....then you have the cost of a small styro box, four plastic bags and a source of pure oxygen for the bag to keep the shrimp alive......
