Flo´s Comeback

Looking good Flo. I'm guessing the diatoms are gone now? They looked like diatoms at least.

I plumbed in a frag tank with my system, and honestly, it gave me a diatom bloom as well. If they don't go away, consider using bakers yeast -- Gets rid of it pretty quickly.

Guys I’ve got some bad news

My tank is overrun by aiptasia and bubble algae and I’m afraid I will not be able to get the upper hand on those pests

So the current plan is to tear the tank down and make a reset with a new scape...

I’m currently searching for new rocks, not so easy these days

Sorry to hear that, but you are the one taking care of the tank.
I’ve always used shrimps and chelmon for aptasia control and emerald crab for valonia.

I had an aiptasia infestation in the tank as well. For several months I did not touch them till they got all over.
I started with Aiptasia X to take down the bigger ones. this worked really well. I think it killed about 80% of the aiptasia that I treated and afterwards I added 3 shrimps.
Now, after 4 weeks and coming back from holidays, I cannot see any aiptasia left.
For bubble algae I would go for a emerald crab and a Foxface rabbitfish.

All natural resources and you do not have to restart and lose the many months of maturing of the tank.

Any idea how these pests entered the tank?
You used that newly designed rock right?

I head the opposite experience with Aiptasia X... and there are a lot of places I can’t reach

I don’t know where they came from but when I first saw them I used Aiptasia X but after a few weeks they came back and I’ve got 5 shrimps I’m the tank but they just don’t touch them

The restart is also fed by the idea that I’m not happy with the scape

Thanks mate! I love chelmon but each time I put one in my tank it always goes right after my acanthastreas... and as mentioned above my shrimps don’t work...

Hi Flo,

Sorry to hear about the aiptasias and bubble algae....
CBB really are hit an miss when it comes to acans.....most of them will nip at them at some point.
My experience with peppermint shrimp is bad too.

About the layout, when you first post photos, I loved it!
Then you post photos with the corals in and I think: Ehhhhh...
I don't know why but I think that is something missing. Maybe some higher points.
In general, I like it, but I agree that is room to improve it.

Get some berghia nudibranchs, aiptasia is all they eat. Plus the can get in the tiniest of crevices to get them.

Hi Flo,

So bad to see those pests!

But in my point of view, you should re-start with non natural live rock, first because they won't be available by now in Europe and second because you won't get any pests if you do the thing in a right way !

I would advice you to use CaribSea Life Rock or Marco Rocks (I know where you need to buy it in europe if you want!)

You won’t believe it but all my aiptasia are gone... ALL
the shrimp somehow decided to eat them and with that decision it eradicated them from the display! Even the really big ones

So one pest gone two left but the restart is imminent





I used Caribsea branches and base rock

My goal is to lift the scape 5cm higher so it would be perfect for sps

Just have to glue it on the weekend and get the new sand then I’m ready to start

So what do you guys think of it?

I like it... although I would add a little more volume... make some rock sticking out vertically.
But hell yeahhhh!!!!!

How are you going to glue it? Use reef cement?

Like it but I would lift it a little more so I can have a sand bed and still enough room for fish to sleep.

I would also stick one nice rock vertical.... after that and one year full of sps you will add some more fragile rocks in it to put more sps and more and more and more

I did glue it with resin (don’t know if that’s the right word)! This stuff is amazing! I now can lift the whole scape and there isn’t a single movement! Perfect
