Gigantea Ciprofloxacin treatment log

This was my gigantea on 1/25/13

When I bought the gigantea I thought it was healthy; and it appeared so to the average person. I didn't see the signs of a sick anemone because I didn't really know what to look for. But now that I look back on it
#1 it had some black carbon looking stuff on its mouth when I took it out of the bag
#2 the mouth was only closed sometimes but was open most of the time (I knew this was bad but didn't really understand that my open was what this gaping business people were referring to, the only pics of gaping I've ever seen posted were pretty big with guts hanging out)
#3 it ate, but didn't really fold in on itself to bring the food into it's mouth like I've seen in some youtube videos, I had to put the food close to the center for it to react to it. I thought eating=good so I fed it every other day. I guess taking in food slowly wasn't what good feeding response meant.

I've never seen it deflate until the night of the 27th shortly after the lights dimmed down. But now that I look back at the pictures I took of it on my phone you can see that it was slowly loosing its shape. The folds became less and less pronounced with each picture I took. I'll try and post a timeline of the decline leading up to the "puffy pancake" night later.

This was it on the night of 1/27/13 it just threw up a piece of shrimp and stayed "flat" till this morning in the treatment tank.

I pmed Minh about what I should do the next morning and he advised me to start treatment asap.

1/28/13
around noon. Inflated a little from the night but still droopy.

5:30pm It goes into the tank with 10 gallons of tank water and 250mg of ciprofloxacin.

I will be doing a water change with 5 gallons of tank water +250mg ciprofloxacin of around 4:45pm and the lights will go out for the day at 5:30.

My schedule sucks throughout the week and to be consistent on dosage and lighting I have chosen lights on at 8am and off at 5:30pm. Water change with ciprofloxacin at 4:45pm.

Good luck! Thanks again to Minh for developing this treatment. Keep us posted. Every time I read a success story using this treatment, it takes me one step closer to ordering a yellow gig.

It's looking good so far.

I didn't get to watch for any reactions to the meds because I left 10 minutes after I did the water change. Nothing happened in the 10 minutes I was there.

9:30pm
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps562bf04d.jpg
It has regained it's full size, maybe bigger. A couple globs pulled from the tank, nothing like the first 2 times though. Mouth is pretty much closed maybe 1/8" slit still there.

I'm using a 20 gallon long for size reference.

Lots of activity today.

1/30/13:

12:20 looking good
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s...psbc4923c3.jpg
Mouth closed
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps882004f3.jpg
What I pulled out of the tank
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s...psa0fef4b4.jpg

1:20 stress spawn
If you look really close you can see the puff of white, it did it some more but I was already starting to get the full water change stuff ready so no pics.
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s...psdd5ca2e6.jpg
1:30 (10 gallons with 250mg of cipro)

5:30
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s...pse17195c4.jpg

9:30 just got home
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s...psc48926e7.jpg

The water looked a little cloudy like it stress spawned again so I took out 5 gallons and put 5 gallons back in with a half pill of ciprofloxacin dissolved. It's actually still fast dripping now.

If it still looks "sad" tomorrow I might do another complete 10 gallon change with 250mg. If it looks good I'll just go back to the 5 gallons with 250 mg dissolved again. Any suggestions otherwise with this plan?

I think he is looking good, and will continue to do well. If you have an air stone, consider put it in there to increase oxygenation of the water. Also I would lower the light and provide as much light as you can for him. This way he won't be dumping his zooxanthellae like he have been doing.

A little duct tape never hurt anyone.

I'll see if I can locate an airstone tomorrow. I have a battery operated one but it is ridiculously loud.

7:46am Quick video. I did a video after the lights turned on too but the camera couldn't handle the leds.

8:05am lights just turned on at 8

4:40pm

What was pulled out throughout the day. The dark stuff on the bottom was in the morning and the stringy stuff later in the day.
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps1b0277df.jpg

The mouth is closed tight now. I haven't seen it deflate since the stress spawn. I plan on treating till Sunday and leaving it in the qt tank till Friday the 8th.

Nothing new to report.

2-1-13

12:48
I now have my maxjet400 and modded tunze 6015 going in the day time and turn off the tunze at night. Tunze pointed at the wall because it's way to strong for a 20 gallon with 10 gallons of water in it.

What I pulled out of the tank.
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps61d41f3e.jpg
I put a napkin around the tunze to polish the water for 10 mins since there was little particles of waste everywhere I couldn't get out with my baster.

If there is considerably less black balls tomorrow, it will be the last day of treatment. If there is I will go till Sunday. I plan on leaving it in the qt until Friday the 8th. No deflation today.

Stringy discharge is much better than the stuff that looks like rat poop. Typical waste is stringy while IME the black stuff indicates a sickness. Things are looking up! Very happy for you.

I figured that the black balls to be bad.

There was none today. That stringy looking stuff I'm finding is from the underside of the anemone around the base. It appears to be solid strands that wrap around the base like its shedding?

2-2-13

Nothing has changed. The only stuff I pulled out of the tank all day.
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s...psa2c86917.jpg

I did a water change with 250mg of cipro today around 4:45.

I don't plan on adding any cipro to my water change tomorrow. Water change procedure will not change. I will still fast drip the water in.

Anemone looks firm, around midday it looked like it was about to explode it got so big.

I might change the move in date to the display to Wednesday morning if it looks good until that time.

I fast dripped 5 gallons of tank water in earlier and left the current 10 gallon in and about 2 hours later it stress spawned again. I took pics but it didn't save to the memory card for some reason.
I took 95% of the water out and put 5 gallons of tank water back in. I did not do cipro with the 5 gallons that's in the tank now. If the anemone looks bad by the end of the day I'll add another 5 gallons of tank water with 125mg of cipro. Right now it looks smaller but not deflated. It's still firm.

I also took the bowl away because it ****ed me off. It was attached pretty good and is pretty sticky. The foot was 1/3 on the bowl and 2/3 on the tank bottom.

Don't end treatment too soon. I would recommend that you treated at least 7 days

I wish I would have tried this on many an anemone that I have lost over the years.

I bet I could have saved my Sunburst as well

Great thread!

+1. Even sick gigs that aren't treated typically look good for the first couple of weeks. It's usually around week three that the nem starts the downward spiral -- inflating and deflating, flattens out, and begins "balding". I would keep it in quarantine for at least 3 weeks.

I ended up doing 125mg of cipro since I had a half pill already cut. Only stringy stuff was expelled last night. No more black balls.

Stress spawn could have been because the heater wasn't working. I stuck my hand in the tank to grab the tunze to polish the water again and it was cold.

Heater is shot. Light says it's on but it's definitely not working properly. I don't have a spare and this heater is the one out of my display already. Stupid thing is only 2 weeks old too.

I took 3 gallons out of qt and fast dripped 5 gallons of tank water in this morning around 8am.

I moved the light directly over the anemone after the drip was done around 9am.

12:00

As you can see I try to get the tank spotless when I do a water change so if there is waste I know that it's new waste.

Anemone looks a little different because there is no longer a bowl in the tank.

You sir are making all the right moves. I think body shape and rigidity for lack of better term is a warning sign just as much as the deflation cycle.

Thanks for documenting this.

Bring the heater back and see if you can get a new one. High temp (at least not low temp) is really important for these anemones
