Planning on spending a decent amount of the day there. It looks like I'll be busy.
I'm looking for live sand, about a 2 gallon bucket worth. Stuff with pods, stars, etc, not the bagged stuff. Do you know if anybody there will be carrying that type of stuff, or possibly packages of those types of animals?

Not much in terms of stuff like that but I am sure if you post it in the CTARS forum here, someone would be willing to bring along a bit of sand to mix into your system. Pods, stars and stuff... usually not, but I am sure I can grab a few of the little guys if you would like to add a few my school system.

Will there be anyone there offering water testing services? I'm getting 2 totally different results for calcium - 300 salifert and 473 hanna. So now I don't trust my other tests and would like another opinion. I'd gladly pay for accurate results

You could check with the stores that will be there. I am not sure on that one. You could also try picking up a new kit from one if the stores as well?

I was in last night for the Frag Farmer's Eve set-ups and all I can say is WOW!!! Only 15 or so people set-up last night and there are already some SUPER nice corals at the FFM. From Pacific East's clams to Jason Fox's sweet colors to AZNutty's crazy starfish!
I am hoping to get in this morning and post a few pics.
This will be the best FFM to date for sure. If you can, you have to come out to shop today...

Now that the dust has settled (kinda...), I wanted to extend a few special thanks.
This was one of the best FFM's for me because I had so much help for the days leading up to it.
First, thanks to the old school CTARS guys for helping me out so much in getting ready the night before and cleaning up the day after. Jas, Pat, Scott, Brian, Keith, Toni. We basically emptied all of the rooms the night before and then moved everything back into them the next night. Thanks to Brian, Scott and Keith for selling raffle tickets during the day. I could not ask for a better selling crew, better looking maybe, but not better! I also want to thank Keith for running the door the whole day and being responsible for not only keeping the masses out till 11am but also counting of people as they did come in. Final count was 820 people, and that doesn't count a few of the vendors who did not get a wrist band (ex. I didn't get one). Having these guys around to help out makes the whole thing happen.
I also want to extend a thanks to all of my students, present and past, who helped out for the FFM. The crazy part this year was that the students who are currently working on projects with me were either off on trips or working on their science fair projects so just about all of the kids who helped out are previous students who came back to help out! Having Alix, Anna, Brian, Ethan, Emma, Kelsey and Nate all there to not only do jobs I gave them but also to fix problems, even before I found them. They were a HUGE help and made this the most stress free day at the FFM for me, which is great!
Lastly, I want to thank all of the companies who came out, or donated things into the raffle. That table was full of a ton of great stuff and that is all donated to the FFM in support of the school project. Without the generous donations from all of those places, that raffle would not be nearly as fun. If you saw something cool in the raffle, buy one and let them know you saw it at the FFM.
If anyone took any pictures from the FFM, people, set-ups, etc..., could you send them along to me so I can include them on the project website, I would appreciate it.

I suppose you want your teaser...
Next year's FFM is on:

March 7th, 2015

I have some ideas for tweaks to make it even better than this year. See you all next year!

Help?

I am looking for the owner of a lost coat from the FFM this year. I have a blue little guy's coat with the name "David Deleon" written on the tag. I would really like to be able to ship this back to his mom and dad if I could find them. Does anyone here know David Deleon or even better his parents?

I just got word that SeaChem will have a rep at the FFM this year, showing off and giving away some of their supplements and such. With more and more "dry goods" vendors coming in it is starting to look more like a conference.

Nobody?

I know plenty of people using Stricktly Blue Light for Growing / Looking at Corals.

Myself included.

White Light makes Corals look Ugly.

Who wants to look at Ugly Corals?

I sure Don't.

Hobbyist want a idea of what the coral might look like in their tank with different lights. White light is for growth blue is for color. If its an expensive coral, I would ask the vendor to turn off the blue light.

There are lots of people who are growing beautiful corals under strickly blue spectrum lights. Take a look at the show tanks of World Wide Corals...all Blue T5's heavy with reef bright supplements. Now I dont think you'll achieve the explosive growth you would see with a ushio 10k, but you'll get great growth along with awesome color.

We have to realize in this hobby that Blue LED's sell, but for those selling SPS pieces, you don't wanna over do the blue. For instance...that beautiful Oregon Blue Tort under heavy LED's looks drab and black. I think a 20K spectrum is a fair color for selling corals.

That is an Old Myth.

If you have ever been Diving you know the Ocean Water is Blue Not White.

And the Farther Down you go the Bluer it gets.

Many of the Nicest Corals are Down Deep and Do Better in Blue Light.

Corals actually utilize the Blue Spectrum Most.

Saying White is for Growth / Blue is for Color is like saying Fish Only Grow as Big as your Tank.

We need to Evolve and stop Spreading this Old Myth.
