I was waiting for this build to get its own thread. Very cool and I'm excited to follow along. It will be incredible to see schools of angels and tangs... and lots of triggers!! Any big morays?? I live in Michigan but I think a trip out to Long Island to see this beast would be worth it! :0)

What is an Algae Scrubber? It is a device you build yourself which grows algae outside of your tank, so that the algae won't grow inside your tank. Algae is the main filter for the oceans and lakes, and algae makes most of the food there too. Algae WILL find a way to grow. So instead of fighting it, just let it grow naturally. In doing so, the algae will absorb ammonia, ammonium, inorganic nitrate, inorganic phosphate, nitrite, metals (including copper), and CO2. The algae will raise pH, and add oxygen, carbohydrates, vitamins, proteins, enzymes, lipids, amino acids, and last but not least (if saltwater) baby copepods to the water. In other words, the algae will do exactly what they do in oceans and lakes. And yes, this means they work in both fresh and salt water. Google "primary production" or "microbial loop" to learn more.
Another natural way to clean water is air injection which allows many benefits like particulate matter binding, better light penetration, helps corals remove waste, and raises oxygen levels. Large macro algae refugium is another option for helping both water cleaning and natural aquarium snack maker There is a ATS forum which should have some good reading for you and maybe change your mind about using GFO and other unnatural means. I would still use a butt kickN skimmer just not running 24/7.

simply amazing, its coming true !
and dont worry about needing a team ... that will not be a problem if your local reefers dont help, we'll make a road trip from Toronto and bring a crew on weekends to see your tank and clean it lol but yea, its a huge project ... which is going to need great management. looking forward to the rest of the built ... also the smaller tank [smaller in comparison of course ] |

I hope by computer control you mean programmable logic controllers :-P You need as rugged and failsafe as possible.
If it were me personally, I'd actually have a redundant plc system with 2 cpu's in a hot standby configuration for a setup this massive, but there's other ways to do it as well

Dread im getting info on the exact specs of control system. Other people asking. Allmost sure come dn from toronto one day when this is near done. Ted did you see that guy who built that 20 k gallon tank and the pvc ladder. Nice swim. I like the room that guy has behind his tank. I dont have that. Just a cat walk with3 ft clearance. Its going to be tight up there

Hey Andrew,...have you figured what your going to use for flow inside the tank. I was wondering if you ever check into those marine bow thrusters? I know they will move left and right, and I think they tilt also to help with docking. They are 12v but controlled manually so they would need to be automated.
