GSMs and onyx clownfish
i have a pair of baby onyx clowns in a bc14 for now. theyre gaining their colors, but no pics right now. when i first started in the hobby i bought a tank that came with two GSMs, but traded them out later once i read that they were too small for it.
the female liked showing off, it seemed

I would have to agree.
I would almost say A. Nigripes but they are so difficult to ship and they are rarely for sale. It is just too bad that they are touchy fish as they are so pretty.

There's nothing prettier than a nice GSM -- I've seen some with strangely shaped or small fins, which I don't like, but a GSM like the ones posted in this thread is a sight to behold. Punch and Judy my GSM pair are tank-bred, not the best stock, but they're rescues; I took them in because they had been through several owners and I knew I could provide a good, permanent home for them. They're misbars and don't have much yellow, and Judy has a scar on her nose where she tangled with a large Xanthid crab, but I love 'em to bits. With their funny faces, red eyes and giant fins they look like sweet teddy bears to me... until they attack me with those teeth! :D

Just getting black saddlebacks to spawn would be a feat as there is only 2 report occurances, let alone trying to cross them.
A black and white picasso would just be a misbarred black ocellaris. If you want to breed a picasso to a black ocellaris it may be much easier than the previously mentioned crossing.

I think the best looking clown is a healthy clown. I see very few really good looking clowns in LFS's. They are all pale, thin, and sickly looking. Regardless of species, when you get them home and give them a nice healthy place to live with good food, they all become beautiful fish. I have 9 clown fish from 4 different species, and I think they are all beautiful.

Question about Picassos - why are some yellowish orange, while others, like the above, are more reddish orange? Is it individual genes, or age??
The thing about this is, in the beginning there was not a whole lot of ways of identifying the differences between a A. Percula and a A. Ocellaris, but because they were/are so similar looking it was not a unusual thing to get a pair of A.O./A.P. clowns breding. This is the main reason for the color differences. The more orange coloration is an Occ. thing, the more yellow is a A. Ocellaris thing.
My favorites are the classics, A. Ocellaris (Both the orange/white color and the B&W), my second would have to be True Percs, and I have to say, thinking about it, I also like Clarkkis...:)

What in the world?!?! This is NOT the reason for the color differences.
Picasso clowns are 100% true percula, they are a lighter orange color when younger & as they age & get fed more variaty in our tanks the colors darken to the brilliant darker orange.
Also WC True percs from different local's will have different colors ...maybe due to the food in that local... True percs from PNG & SI are usually a very deep bright beautiful orange where true percs from an undisclosed location are more likley to be the lighter orange.

I LOVE my Clarki's :) But Der_Iron_Chef I had a BEAUTIFUL Cinnamin That I was in love with before my first Clarki. And it jumped out of my hood and divider one night. They tend to jump. Wish I knew and I would have put up screens. I loved it tho. :)

There's some melanopus love! I think they're absolutely gorgeous and too often mistaken for the more plain Tomato Clownfish.

Thanks.:D You could try getting a Haddoni for your Clarkii. Mine wasn't near that black to begin with. After about 6 months of living in a Haddoni the drab brownish color turned jet black and the white lines developed a blueish tint to them. I removed her from the Haddoni and to a LTA. Her colors have faded. She's back with the Haddoni now and starting to look better again. I know that doesn't prove the Haddoni is responsible for the color change, but that's the way it seems.
I've been trying to find a mate for her, but I'm being pretty picky. It's hard to find a small male melanistic Clarkii.

Bummer on the clarks, but I am very happy to hear the others are still cranking out the babies and are happy. I wish I could figure out what causes a female to snap on the male. I had another pair of blacks and a pair of maroons split like that. The female in both cases went after the male until he was nearly dead and it happened overnight.
Have you gotten the black female to calm down or does she still draw blood when you stick your hand in the tank? If you get a chance some time I wouldn't mind seeing pictures of them.

I'm only the third person that loves black saddlebacks :(
The original black and white clown and still the best ;)
My store sells them for $24 all day long when we can get them, I order them everytime I can. We don't even bother with anything else but them, perculas, ocellaris, B&W ocellaris and GSMs. We have to mark anything else down to like $8 to get it to sell lol.
We had a mated pair of "semi-picassos," looked as good as any young picassos here, and we couldn't sell them for $42 each lol. Finally sold the pair to a guy for $80, just because they were already hosting in a nem that he wanted actually now that I think about it.
Oh to live in cali.

I live in the mid-west, Indiana. I bought the above picassos from my lfs a year ago and paid $250 for the pair. Now, my lfs charges $350 for a pair of ORAs' Grade A picassos and can't keep them in stock!

I absolutely love black and white clowns. My LFS (the better one) sells them for $90 each, though. But they got a pair in a few weeks ago and they're so adorable! Such unique personalities noticeably right off the bat. I hope they're still there in a month or two! :)
I also love tomato clowns. Beautiful fish. Love 'em. No experience with them, though.

Are they b/w now? Or was that just the lack of light in the tank that made them look b/w during the vid?
Slakker
08/24/2008, 04:34 PM
Under pure blue light the orange coloration will look black.
There is no B/W percula variant (onyx is as close as it gets, and they retain the orange face and usually fins), and B/W ocellaris are usually nearly all black at birth.

I have to change my vote to GSM. I just noticed yesterday that my maroons are starting to change color.
Does anyone know at what age they start to turn from white to gold? I thought mine were around 1 year old when I got them but now I'm starting to wonder

Don't have any pics, but I really like my melanistic TR Solomon Islands Clarkiis. They're very dark chocolate brown instead of black, but supposed to turn blacker as they get older.
I also used to have pink skunks...they're pretty too, more delicate-looking than most other clowns.
