I went to Home depot and bought a few sticks of WATER WELD by JB weld it says it contains epoxy resin and Triethylenetetramine. I want to epoxy rock together this week for the new aquascaping in my display. Randy or Reefhighlander or anyone familiar with these compounds give me insight on if its cool to use. It says you can use it in potable water systems, which gives me the calm that I could live with it but can marine creatures??? Thank you.

MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET
SECTION I - PRODUCT AND COMPANY INFORMATION
Product Name: WaterWeld
http://jbweld.net/techinfo/WaterWeld%20MSDS%20(3-10-2004).pdf
It does have some sulfur & zinc in it, which could be a problem IMHO if there is enough present & released into the water column.
The MSDS sheet has no information regarding aquatic toxicity. The toxicity to humans and rabbits is quite low.
It would be nice to see if other hobbyists have used it without problems. ;)

I would check out these links for hobbyists who have used the waterWeld and see what they have to say from experience:

If you decide to use it, I would not use a lot of it in your tank a one time. It takes time for zinc and sulfur to be removed through skimming and GAC. I would give it at least a week between small applications. Running a polyfilter may be advisable as well or better yet find a product without any harmful ingredients.

I used 2-1/2 sticks of it in one night securing my rock work. This was about 3 weeks ago. Nothing closed up, nothing reacted badly, skimmer didn't even go nuts.
Good stuff.

Dustin,
Was there any noticable sulfur odor (rotten egg odor)?

Not that I recall. I didn't smell anything. I'll smell the stick when I get home, I remember it had about your standard epoxy smell, not very strong though.

That's a good sign. The human nose can detect quite low levels of sulfur. :)

According to the hobbyist in this thread, He received the following reply from the manufacturer of WaterWeld:
http://forums.saltwaterfish.com/vb/showthread.php?374838-Ok-Joe!-Here-I-go!-Mantis-tank!!&p=3242779
"JP WaterWeld
Contacted Manufacturer and the gave the following instructions....
Safe! Said you did NOT have to wait 24 hours."
With the reports we have received from others, it sounds like WaterWeld is a fairly safe product. :)

I just smelled it in the tube, I can barely smell the standard 2-part epoxy smell. No sulfer smell, just resin.

Okay so the plan is no later than Friday the big aquascape is taking place I will use approximately 5 sticks max but will try to keep it to a minimum. I am taking live rock out and the epoxing them. SOrry to get off track, but do I let them dry a bit then epoxy them. I as you know ask alot of questions. So I'm not there, like, "why doesn't this work, mean while things are dying around me?" I am glueing 17 rocks or less in two mounds and one arch in the center. Anyone rescape with the same rocks in your tank epoxy them and put them back again in the same day?

dont forget these products dont really always lock as tight as you think you may wanna zip tie, or drill and put some sorta reef safe plastic pegs just for a added precaution.

Who sells the rods that people use? Zip ties check, drill check, epoxy check but I would like to get some rods to prop the rocks up so the detrius can flow out.

This is good to hear about the water weld as I just picked some up and plan on using it on dryrock. As for the rods, there a few retailers online. Otherwise, I've read of people cutting up and using plastic coat hangers successfully; given you're not aquascaping with bolders.

I don't think using plastic coat hangers is a good way to go. The plastic can brake down and expose the metal. We have had a few hobbyists that ran into this problem. :)
The same applies to plastic coated screening (metal inside).

I guess I wasn't aware that there is metal inside plastic coat hangers? I've broken a few (just from normal wear and tear) and have never seen any metal inside. But I agree, acrylic rods would be preferable.

They make several types of hangers, some are pure plastic which is fine IMHO. Others are plastic coated metal hangers, which is what I was refering too. When you cut the hangers it becomes known which type you have. The pure plastic hangers are quite a bit thicker for strength then the metal coated hangers. :)
Used it also, no ill affects.

I was able to purchase acrylic rods and discs from McMaster Carr something like that. Near me in Santa Fe Springs read Sanjays old build and well gave them a call prompt service and attention, ordered extra for peg legs for the discs.

This stuff sucks compared to aquamend. I would bet money Home Depot switched to it because it was cheaper.
I used 5 sticks on my aquascape before using up the last two sticks of aquamend, then used another 6 sticks of the jb water weld.
1. The stick is only one color, so you can't tell that it's mixed all the way just by looking at it. There have been many times where I thought Aquamend was all the way mixed, but there was still a good bit of green still visible.
2. It's sticky... and not the good sticky. After a few applications, the water weld will stick to fingers in a really annoying fashion. It's hard enough getting aquamend to stick to rocks sometimes, Water Weld is like that but then you have to fight it off your fingers as well.
3. It smells worse than Aquamend. It's like a sickening peanuts and urine smell. I'm going to order some Aquamend as soon as I use up my water weld stock.

I used it on my rocks and it worked fine, holds pretty good and I've never had any issues that I could trace to it. IME it takes way longer to cure than it says on the label. I zip tied my stuff together and let it cure for 24 hours, then cut off the zip ties the next day. I had some rock towers that were 2 heavy pieces of rock, maybe 15 lbs each, and the putty held well enough that I could pick the formation up by the top piece and the bottom held fine. I think it's good stuff. Lol it does stick to your fingers like crazy, though.

For the price, Aquamend is way better.

Some one was asking about epoxies here you go, I use the boston farms or aquatics epoxy its okay.
I did like the JB stuff. Its stronger than the purple boston stuff but it is everything crybaby Red said it is, plus if you get on something like the ledge of your mahogany display.... It's a B to get off.
But for those who are not careful like me use a super oily wood polish or wax I think its called wood gold or something, smells like almonds, Smart and final carries it.

crybaby eh? A word of advice... Don't eat or drink anything I offer you at the meet on Sunday if you want to retain control of your bowels for the evening.

Be careful of the restaurants you eat at Red, you don't get it it's a brotherhood. Chefs for the most part don't take well to being upset.
All of a sudden you got culinary skills...Laughing way out loud. I will let Jorge taste your food he's my food taster, and he's humungous baby too. I'll be sure to bring extra diapers for y'all. And desitin for the diaper rash.

I was at Lowe's today and couldn't find anything except for a product called Fix-it-Stick. I was looking for the JB Weld product that I had just ran out of, but could not find it. Has anybody used the Fix It stuff? It is made by a company called Oatey. Red and white paper inside the clear tube. I got some, but will wait and see if anyone has had any ill effects from the product. I wasn't able to check the ingredients until I got home, but they include: bisphenol a diglycidyl ether resin, crystalline sillica, glass oxide, mercaptan anime blend, iron, and magnesium silicate hydrate.

Its good as soon as it sets.. It can be used underwater without issue so doesn't even need to set/cure really to be ok to use....
