Guys, i'm trying to find a pump for a budget 90 gallon reef tank, i'm looking to get a Mag 18 but everywhere I look I find both Danner Magnetic Drive 18 Supreme and Pondmaster 18 Supreme... are they the same pump?

My thoughts at first is that maybe the pond master is not designed for salt water use?

I bought a pondmaster that is rated at 2400 GPH for $181 off E-Bay. as far as I know they are the same pumps but the pondmaster has an 18' cord as compared to 6'. It is also rated for saltwater use inline or submerged with 1" supply and return fittings. The same Danner mag-drive would have cost $400( hope this helped )

same, they're for fresh or salt.

the only difference is the added cost for the longer power cord. Mag Drives do add a good amount of heat to the water, so if that is an issue you might want to look elsewhere.

the pondmaster is a lot cheaper than the pure magdrive, and I've been running a mag 7 for 6 years as my return pump and my water stays between 79 and 80 all the time with the air on at 76, no heaters or chiller(although i have a chiller just in case i ever need it). Besides you can run the mag-drive pumps as an external too,not just as a submersible

When I ran my Mag 7 external I placed a small cheap fan on it to keep it cool

A pump that can run internally or externally will add more heat to the water no matter hwo it is run, because that is how it is cooled by default. External only pumps will be more efficient with adding heat and some internal/externals are going to be better than others. It may not be an issue for people, but it is something to consider.

pumps are the same. danner uses better materials. If you do regular water changes these pumps should not effect your water temp dramatically.

Whoa, wait, how does that work? Not to troll, but water changes have zero effect on pump heat.

Lol, yeah, noticed that post-messaging. Friend from another board linked it, and I couldn't help reply to it.
