My reg is a parker and yes it use a vcr fitting. I think the washer I got is not the right one the outside diameter is too big it and will not fit into the reg input.
The seal should fit inside the reg right?

Hi Alanle, will this work?
http://ebay.us/ZTyR1f
That regulator will work. The price is high. Consider you have to spend another ~$200 bucks for the CGA 320 nipple, fittings, solenoid, needle vavle, bubble counter. I would not pay more than $70 for the reg.

Would anyone who has built a best bang for the buck chime in with what they built, how it's working and what it cost? I'm interested and as pretty as stainless is, I'd rather save the money and get the minimum needed to work (but work well). It'd be great to see more budget builds. I don't care if it's ugly!

I think the most important thing to consider in a regulator is supply pressure effect. For whatever regulator yoiu buy, make sure you get the spec sheet (and that you aren' going to gas all your fish).

Did you put one together?
But by "best bang for the buck" I don't mean cheap crap. It's more some of the builds here have mismatched brass and stainless steel parts and it seemed there was some reluctance to post the cheaper builds due to all the super beautiful stainless steel builds. The beautiful builds are really nice but brass is just fine with me or a mix of SS/brass.
So I'm not asking for cheap crap but rather the builds someone might have hesitated to post because they aren't as beautiful. But maybe I'm wrong and everyone is going SS because if you're patient, you can get them on eBay for good prices.

I've built both brass and SS. I try not to mix the metals as we are working in a wet environment and I want to avoid galvanic corrosion. SS is nice and, yes, you can get some really nice items on Ebay if you are patient. I've got one I'm giving to a friend with a SS Veriflo regulator (single state, but low supply pressure effect) with a beautiful Swiss gauge.

Just curious, as I'm new to calcium reactors, and not too comfortable upgrading the parts on my current regulator(reef fanatic), what you guys think of these:
http://greenleafaquariums.com/products/gla-gro-1-co2-regulator.html
Or, should I leave my fears, and say, just upgrade the parts on my regulator? Learning about them add I upgrade the parts? Like I was thinking first about a new needle valve, and possibly new gauges?
What would you all suggest to a noob, wanting to learn, lol, but not wanting to poison himself and his significant other.. [emoji4] [emoji4] [emoji4]

Not to be a pain but really read the whole thread too because some gotchas are not in the first post (like how to tell non-VCR from VCR regulators which is still a tiny bit unclear to me, etc). I realize it's a big task to document all that just pointing out worth the time to go through it. It's still a little confusing to me but I think for those of us that haven't done it, just have to accept it's going to be a couple orders to get everything. But the main parts are really clear to me now so thanks to you and everyone else who posted.

hey guys,
i bought a Parker 4A-NML-V-SS-K, 1/4" Tube Metering Valve. When i took off the current valve on my reg, the parker valve doesnt match the thread count into the solenoid. I realize there are different thread systems out there. Did I mess this up or can i buy a converter? The solenoid has a female and the parker valve is male. Both are 1/4. Thanks!

did more reading and the parker has compression 1/4 on each side, which is obviously different from npt 1/4 and will not fit. Since i am upgrading my current valve, the way i see this happening is to have the current valve open and add this valve onto the CO2 line after the current crappy flow valve. Thats pretty ghetto fabulous but i cant think of another way of doing it.
Ideas are welcome :)

Not all Ebay parts are bad. You just need to know what you are looking at. Might as well go with CO2Arts regulators. They have 10 years warranty for a fraction of the price.

I am like you. I posted about these a few weeks back also.. I probably will go with one of the stainless units when they are back in Stock, as I only need one output of course.. But, I like those also, in lieu of hand building one like the rest of these guys..
I also asked and still wonder about replacing parts one at a time on my |reef fanatic regulator.. Like the needle valve, to a more precision valve, or even just the gages..
Just to learn and begin, But most on here only want to build brand new regulators.. And I understand that, but even a diy upgrade of some parts would be fun and a good intro..
I may try and do that, but I'm not sure.. I could really use some instruction and advice..

I actually built mine from eBay parts, I was just trying to help the person who posted about wanting to buy a pre built dual stage.
I don't think upgrading your gauges on your reef fanatic would be of any benefit, but adding a precision needle valve will help you tune your co2 a lot easier. I'm using a Parker needle valve, and I can turn it like an 1/8 of an inch in either direction and my ph inside of my reactor changes .1 plus or minus. It's been super easy to dial in the co2.

Thanks for the reply. I will check into the valve for sure.. Do you know the number? The guages just have some corrosion on them, and I'd like for it to at least look nice..
Right now I can't afford to build a completely new regulator.. So I wanted to still try and learn and possibly upgrade what I have.. As I get more into the reactor, I don't care for the regulator I have, as the psi is factory set at 25. I could be wrong, but it seems like I could be wasting gas. If nothing else, I'd like the control to be go up and down if I wish..

Those are tube fittings so if you want a rigid connection, some stainless or brass tubing would work. Other way would be to change out the elbows to npt on both ends.

I just picked up one of these. He has about 20 if anyone else is interested.
He is not taking returns, but in his description he claims they are in perfect working order. If they do have a leak, it should be covered by the eBay money back guarantee as I would expect that would be considered an item not as described. Am I living in dream land? I don't buy much from ebay, but have never had an issue so I don't know how strong their issue resolution program is.

Guys I need help. I used this thread to build my regulator and it was an awesome reference. I went with the Burkert 6011 valve. Got it from eBay. I have now burned through my 3rd one. They seem to last a couple weeks then they dont shut off. It makes that clicking sound when activated, but will still allow gas through. I have been buying these.......

Seems to be the only one on eBay with the right fittings. Anyone else have these issues? Something I am doing wrong? I am giving it 40 PSI in and I was under the impression that they are good up to 65.
Thanks!

How long did you wait to see if there were any more bubbles? The residual gas between the solenoid and the metering valve could take a while to deplete its pressure depending on your setup. So even if the solenoid is closed, the gas doesn't stop immediately.

Chef, been doing some reading on this. Does yours get really hot? I'm wondering if the issue is that they are the 24v dc version? I read about another guy having an issue with them saying it was really really hot. It's normal for them to be warm, but they shouldn't be hot. I wonder if it's burning itself out?
Did yours come with the a filler piece that fits between the solenoid and the plug connector? Mine was missing. Not having a lot of confidence in that eBay seller.
I found another place that sells them, the price is reasonable, but the shipping is ridiculous. They have local retailers all over the place. I'm going to call the one near me in the morning to see if they have them in stock for me to pick up.

I built mine last night and plan on installing and doing a leak test tomorrow. As I built it, I had another thought. You said you have gone through 3 solenoid so far, did you use the same power adapter each time? Did you build it yourself? If you used the same one each time, any chance you had any stray wires that may be shorting it out?

I would have thought that, but I still hear the clicking sound which leads me to believe that it is still trying to function. It does get hot, but from what I have read that is normal. Mine did have the rubber piece that went between the power supply and the unit.

i have the same one, works great, i used the plug end with the led so i can see if it has power, the reason i went with the 110 volt model is i have it plugged into my apex eb8, plus i do not see any reason to to add 24 volt power adapter when i would be using ac power anyway, imo it just one less part to go bad.

the valve you picked above is a 110 model, the 24 volt adapter will not work with it.

i do not think you want to use this, unless you valve is dc powered,
all you would need is a cord with a 110 plug on it., i thing i used and 18 gauge one from amazon.

I forgot to mention that I'm so glad this got posted before I started running mine. I would have fried my solenoid. I initially put a standard PC plug on my 24v solenoid. Roy, Chef and I both bought 24v solenoids from the same vendor on eBay. He went through 3 before figuring out the issue was with the plug. I'm grateful, because I was doing the exact same thing and he saved me a big headache.
I'm going to order a new from from freshwatersystems, those are the ones to get . LeftC, who I believe was the original DIY guy who got this whole thing started workers with Burkert to get these made with the better seals for CO2.

I consider myself pretty mechanically inclined, but I am having some big issues visualizing how this fitting actually works.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d39/onephattai/hoke/IMG_20141026_163426.jpg
If these were to fit together, isnt the piece on top upside down? Shouldnt the threads be facing to the left?
Obviously that little stem does not have threads on it, so I am having issues understanding how that little thing comes into play. Does that insert into the metering valve somehow? Is there some sort of compression fitting on the metering valve that will grab onto that thing? If not, I can only assume that goes inside the tubing, but in that case, I dont see how the nut that clamps down around the tubing is supposed to attach, given there are no threads. I suspect my initial thought is how it works, but frankly these pictures shown thus far have me pretty confused, and I want to make sure I order the right fittings, given that particular one is not exactly cheap.
Here is what it looks like assembled on the manf website, so how the hell do you hook that little stem to the metering valve? lol

Looks like it's in great shape. Not familiar with the ProStar line. Not sure who is the actual manufacturer. If retail is $600 it's probably nickel plated brass.
Personally I picked a reg with 30 psi output. 15 psi would have worked too. We run our regs much lower than the planted guys. Mine is at 8 psi.

Where are you guys finding your fittings? I have priced them out on a couple different sites and seem to keep coming up with very similar $$ numbers.
SS-4-HN - $4.15
SS-4-RSE-2 - $21.70
SS-2-SE - $18.30
SS-200-R-4 - $10.20
+ shipping and my grand total is right around $65. this was all through Radwell International.

So with this in mind - looks like their prices are cheaper than buying via ebay. Here is how I am picturing this going together. Someone please chime in if this is wrong.
Also, is there a different check valve that you guys recommend from this one that is just as good and may save me some money?

I was going to talk to the Swagelok rep when I got the other parts to see if they have a solid tubing to put inthere that would connect the 2 parts. If they don't then I was just planning on attaching it with the Co2 tubing.

Not sure if you guys know the answer to this, but my guage dials were bent when they were shipped to me so I am looking to replace them. If my current low range dial is 0-200, I should be able to replace it with something like a 0-60psi guage and then just make sure that I only keep the pressure within that range?

Started a thread but received no response. Just wondering if I need a check valve on my co2 line after my bubble counter?
I had one but my bubbles wouldn't go, like it was backwards soon as I take it off bubbles flow perfect! Put a brand new one on and same thing, so right now running it without a check valve. Thanks

Did you try reversing the check valve? Check valves also have an operating pressure. If the pressure on the incoming side is lower than rated, it doesn't work.

You place the check valve before the bubble counter. Look at the directional arrow. Also increase the output pressure.

Alanle I got the regulator off you last year with bubble counter attached, also grabbed the silver check valves off eBay, arrows are pointed in the right direction. I would turn the pressure up just afraid of doing damage as you recommended not going above 30psi. Looking at the murlock check valve, or that dennerle check valve. Any thoughts on those?

You can go as high as 45PSI. However, with the CA reactor you only need around 10-20PSI. By the way, replace that check valve every year or so. It can go bad. You don't want water to get into the solenoid and regulator.

Here's another tip for testing used regulators. I just got a praxair/concoa 312 and while testing it, the second stage would not hold pressure. I proceeded to setup the return with the eBay seller but figured I'd test it one more time. This time after pressurizing the second stage and removing it from the co2 bottle, I cut off the fingers of disposable gloves, slipped one over the CGA nipple and one over the hose barb fitting that was on the shutoff valve that came with the regulator. I used rubber bands (daughters hair ties) to seal up the gloves. I went to check on it an hour later and the glove tip was inflated and the gauge was down about 20psi. So I removed the stock post body assembly, attached the solenoid I will be using, pressurized the second stage again and now it holds pressure just fine. All along it was just a bad shutoff valve that was going to be replaced anyways. I forgot to take a pic of the inflated glove tip on the post bodyhttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160810/41ecbf6b4ba752370a4696019ead0fb0.jpg

1st should be letters. Probably SS for stainless steel. Last letters show a vernier handle which is nice. The middle letters/number is important because it tells you the size and type of fittings it has. $60 is fair.

I know costs are all over the place depending on the type of deal you can find on ebay but ball park what are we looking at here for a quality setup? I dont care if stainless or brass as I will plasti dip anyway to color coordinate with the rest of my stand setup but curious.
With the dual stage does that negte the end of tank dump and issues with the needle valve or does it only give you better insight that it is coming so you can address earlier?
I was looking at the carbon doser for ease of use but I have a concern that should it fail open or such I am screwed unless I still add another shutoff. With these you rely on the needle valve and have the solenoid as backup so it already has redundancy.
Plus from a cosmetic standpoint these are sexy vs the carbon doser... and that counts for something.

@soulpatch, Here was my parts list and prices. I am ~$400 into my setup including Co2 tank. I did have to drop $40 on new gauges though because they were damaged when they were shipped to me. You could probably go quite a bit cheaper on the fitting too if you went brass since you will be using plastidip. Hopefully this list helps out some people.
- CONCOA 432 Stainless Steel Regulator ($60)
- CGA 320 Nipple+Nut+Washer (Brass) ($10)
- Burkert 6011a Stainless Steel solenoid ($42)
- Burkert DC Power Supply ($7.99)
- Wika 0-30psi pressure gauge ($20.75)
- Wika 0-1000psi pressure gauge ($20.75)
- 5lb Co2 Tank ($58.78)
- Swagelok fittings
-- (2x) SS-2-SE ($33.2 for both)
-- SS-4-HRN-2 ($6.30)
-- SS-4-TA-1-2 ($5.60)
-- SS-401-PC ($5.70)
-- Swagelok Meter Valve, SS-SS4-VH ($132)

Awesome thanks for the list. Considering that the carbon doser is 300 and if I take the tank out of yours it is basically the same it seems to work out in my favor to go with a serious system. Especially when I consider that you have a backup to the needle valve whereas the carbon doser is without redundancy.

I notice my needle valve does not really affect the bubble counter; I have to turn the main regulator knob to effect a change. Is the needle valve really supposed to make a difference in bubble count? I can't dial it in with the needle valve. I bought a used regulator, so maybe it's broken. What are your experiences with the usefulness of the needle valve, versus the main regulator knob, when dialing in a good bubble count?

Does the valve come with nuts and ferrules?
You need the following parts
1) 1/8 mnpt x 1/8 tube elbow (to connect solenoid and the valve)
2) 1/8 port connector (to connect valve to 1/8 elbow)

No nuts or ferrules ! So I just get 1/8" od tube nuts on each end of the valve and 2 port connectors. Then the outgoing side of the valve will need a 1/8" tube x 1/4" tube (for outgoing oxygen line to the calcium reactor ) ??

These and then I need nuts for each side of the meter? Then any 1/8" od tube fitting with ferrules to connect to the port connector...is that correct ? Do I need front and rear ferrules or just front ??

Is teflon tape required at these port connector connections? Everything I read from swagelok doesn't show any teflon tape. It also has you hand tighten then do 1 1-4 turns after hand tighten for correct connection. I feel teflon tape might alter this where it won't get the proper tightness.

Also is this the way the other end connects? I had to remove the nut to take the pic, but I assume this is how the front and rear ferrules go on the tube ? @alanle

Hi everyone... And Alanle
i just got a new CO2 Tank. filled it up with CO2 and attached everything back on.
Now i cant get any bubble count.. Can the needle valve be defective .. i see air bubbles going into my 2nd small calcium chamber...
What am i doing Wrong..

You sure the bubble counter is filled with a fluid so you can actually see the gas going through it?

Seems you are getting CO2 into the reactor. Are you saying you don't have any bubbles in the bubble counter? Maybe a picture of the setup would help?

I have a 24V 2506. I ordered a 24V AC adapter for it and noticed it only has 2 wires. Does the 2506 require a ground wire to function properly?

Terrific info on how to test a used dual regulator, Also, it's good to know that a single stage regulator dumps gas when the tank gets low, thanks alanle.
Couple questions.
How important is a check valve?
Any problem using polypropylene tubing for CO2?

check valve is very important. Your feed line to the reactors are adding pressure. I'm assuming the feed line (input) pressure is greater then your effluent (output) therefore it needs to go somewhere, which can be your CO2 feed. You don't want salt water getting into your valves/regulator when the CO2 pressure drops lower then the input of the water.
Great queston on the poly tubing. I'd like to know as well.

Instead of a check valve, could the needle valve could be placed higher than aquarium?
Polypropylene has excellent resistance to CO2, just not sure if it's a bad choice for another reason.

No. You need a check valve. What kind of needle valve do you have? Just buy a nice check valve from mcmaster and connect it to the output of the needle valve.

The needle valve that came with my regulator was junk, so I replaced it with a Dwyer air meter which is not much better for fine adjustment. Anyway, I did get water in the Dwyer so I placed it above the aquarium, which solved that problem. I have a hard time trusting any check valve. In my mind, it's not if they fail but when.

I have 2 spare systems available. These were built for a show and I don't need it anymore. Regulator is a dual stage GO (rebranded from Swagelok). Clippard solenoid and stainless Parker needle valve. All parts are new.

Reg looks good but be aware that it is not stainless but nickel plates brass. It will be fine for our use.
Metering valve looks to be correct.

I have purchased a CP brass regulator. In getting the metering valve and solenoid, should I keep all the metals brass or is is OK to mix brass and stainless steel? Thinking there could be issues with galvanic corrosion?

Hello, I stumble across this tread on accident and have read all the way through it. It has made me want to build a regulator for you Co2 setup. I have been on ebay looking and came up with this for my first build.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/291860296916?ul_noapp=true.
I'm not trying to get a highend regulator right now, just something that is better than my current one which is rusted out and not even sure if it works.
