View Full Version : Recommendations on 30ft Hose

I'm trying to decide on a hose that I can unroll during water change days and pump water from the garage to the tank (about 30ft). So far the only thing I've come up with is braided vinyl hose.

I'm hoping someone else has a recommendation since braided vinyl isn't the easiest to unravel and stretch and then roll back up. Any ideas?

I use a long piece of regular vinyl tubing. They sell it off a roll in my local big box hardware store so I was able to get 40 feet. If they have rolls of the braided stuff they should have rolls of the plain tubing as well.

I use my old Python tubing. You could string together the length you need.

Can that pocket hose handle saltwater? Seems like an awesome hose for this.

I use poly tube. You can get it either by the ft or in 25 and 50 foot lengths at any of the hardware stores. 5/8" od works well since a 5/8" union will push on the nozzle of a maxijet. I use it for both syphon and fill line.

You can also get in 100ft rolls, 5/8" is less than $20 for 100 ft.

You should try one of those retractable hoses you see on tv and post a review on it lol

That pocket hose is the best thing I ever bought. It's so small and it doesn't kink. I used to use my aqueon water changer tubing, but that kinked so bad you couldn't use it anymore.

CP Aquatic...how long have you been using it for aquatic purposes? We have one we use in the garden and love it, but I was concerned about it holding up with the saltwater. Curious if you've noticed any degradation? Not to highjack the OP, but would love to hear your input.

wow - Al from Tooltime has sold me on that pockethose!

Now I just need to get my hose back from my old house. It's in another area code...

The hoses with brass fittings I'm trying to avoid (since they contain copper and I can see them breaking down and leeching over time).

I looked at the pockethose solution, I've seen it at the local hardware stores. When I go to their site and look at the instructions, they do post the following warning.

Edit: *The pokethose could be completely safe, I think they are mostly mentioning any standing water that would sit outside could be contaminated.

So I think I'm going to use my 25ft aqueon water changer and extend it with the python tubing to get the distance I need. If it works and doesn't kink, then I'll stick with that. If it doesn't, I'll switch to the braided vinyl tubing and just plumb it with a ball valve on the end and hange it on a garden hose rack.

Well you can cut the ends off any garden hose

Good point Redman, didn't think of that.

I honestly wouldn't use garden hose as most contain petroleum based rubbers that will leach chemicals and rv drinking water hose usually contains mildew inhibitors. I use 5/8" ID vinyl tube from eBay. It arrived with no kinks or flat spots like the stuff at the big box stores. $32 for 50ft.

Those of you that use vinyl or poly tubing, how do you store it? I'm assuming something clean... Haha

Drain the water out, coil it up and put it in one of my water change buckets.

Honestly I can't recall using it with saltwater yet. Just because the garden hose end wouldn't be easy to hook to any of my pumps.. I use it for mostly for filling the salt mixing container, topping water off, and for use on my freshwater tanks. The other thing I would add is the ones with brass fittings I had blow apart where as the one with plastic ends have held up better.

Can you hard plumb with 1" PVC through the basement then just have a short piece of vinyl at the end? It would save you a ton of $$ and would be easier than unrolling/rolling 30ft of hose.

I would love to have hard plumbed to the tank, but I'm in Florida on the coast, and what you call a basement, we call a water table!!! Couldn't go the attic route either due to tank location vs. roof slope. Stuck with the hose method for now.
