Are they even still open? I was past there last month and the store looked empty. Last few times before that, they had next to nothing in stock and what they did have looked terrible.

Is Seatopia Aquatics still open? They are definitely not where they used to be at 685 Bergen Blvd, Ridgefield, NJ 07657. I went to swing by there after work yesterday and it's now a dance studio. Just wanted to let people know to save them a trip.

Adam's Pet Safari, now in the shopping center corner of RT 513 (Main St.) and Rt. 206 in Chester. They had a lot of problems with the saltwater section after they moved, but it's OK now, they carry some good SW equipment like the SCWD, kalkwasser, etc. Carry parts like impellers for powerheads. Good selection of frozen foods. Some of the people working there have reefs. (908)879-8998.

Seatopia on Bergen Blvd is definately closed. I am not sure where they moved or just closed all together. I live few blocks off from there and now it's dance studio. It's pretty sad because I just got into this hobby and one of the closest LFS is closed =(

I was on heading south on Rt 9, north of Freehold when I noticed a new store opening up. It was on the north bound side and I think it was a custom tank builder. Sorry about the poor description, but does anyone have any info about this place?

That's Oceanarium
it's a new store. I stopped by they Saturday. THe store will officially be opened on Wednesday, one of the owners said that he will have in a bunch of stuff. I look at the LR he had, looks good, some bracnh, fiji, and some stuff he said he was using to cycle the tanks with, but it had a lot of life on it. Had some nice Angels, and a few other fish. But, not a lot. I hope it stays around as we all know how fast a store can come and go. I mentioned that Pynces said some thing about the store online, and he was surprised. MAYBE, NJRC can arrange something with them, like group buys or discounts, that would be a good way to get new members, PHYL.
Anyway, I'll write more about it Wednesday, I'll stop in and see what's up on my way to work. I want to see what corals and agnels he can get. Said he could get a Peppermint Angel, but I don't have that kinda of loot. That's a 2,500 to 5k fish. Anybody got 1995 to 5k to lend me??????

I doubt he can get one as the diver is no longer collecting them and hasn't been for over a year. Add to that the fact that they would go to Japan, especially when they get 2-3x what we are willing to pay.

WWW.TFJPETCENTER.COM Is a on-line store in toms river that lets you pick items up. They just sell dry goods tho, I ordered a few things from them and they let me pick the stuff up to save the shipping, Faith & Tom are really nice people. They also do special orders, I just ordered the Aquafuge PS small with light kit from them.

The Store in Hackettstown is "Hackettstown Pet & Supplies"
The owner is Jim Bunting. By far one of the best places I have been to in NJ. I have purchased thousands in equipment and fish from him. He has the best prices by far in the area on equipment and fish. He wont sell you sick fish and prefers to quarentine his fish before you take them home. If there is something you are looking for he will order it for you, wether it be fish or equipment.
He is currently working on setting up a nother seperate reef room down stairs.

I stopped by the old Aquarium Authority in Marlton, it is now called "In Living Color".. Not open yet but he has quite an impressive set up. Live stock will be in next week and store will be open by the end of the month. Owner's name is Jay, seems like a nice guy. He hired someone from the Baltimore Aquarium to set up his tanks. Upstairs is Salt and downstairs will be Freshwater and Pond. Very high tech. Hopefully his prices will be reasonable. With the Hidden Reef out of commision for a while, it will be nice to have a nice LFS within 1/2 hour. I'll post back after he opens!

Went to Fish Underground today and it has a "FOR RENT" sign in front and nothing insde. But luckily Reef Encounters is only one more exit away off Route 80.
Also I have been to the Route 4 place before and went again today after checking out this thread. I dont know who the guy is working there but I am not sure he really knows what he is talking about.
All thier water has a green Tinge to it and there are dead fish all over the place. If they are still in the process of getting it up and going I would say they have a long way to go.
But I did notcie they have some serious RK2 equipment set up, so maybe they will improve over the next few months..
OH... One more thing they have a Black Tip reef shark on display, kind of cool and worth checking it out..
jjmatti, if your in the area check out The Fish Tank they are located in saddle brook on route 46 check out www.InTheFishTank.com for info

Is Eagle Reef in Hillsborough an actual shop or a business out of someone's house - only reason I ask is that I remember that area being all residential?
Either way next time Im down that way to visit my parents ill have to check it out :)
Ive been to four fish stores in the north jersey area during the past month.
Absolutely Fish - Large selection of corals and fish. The best in the area. Expensive
The Fish Tank on route 46 - Big store and hard to believe....some of their corals were more expensive than comparable pieces at Absolutely Fish.
Reef Encounter in Hackinsack - Largest store of the three. Fantasic selection of dry goods. Fish look very heathly.
Their coral selection is limited. And what they had were not that great looking. Decent selection of fish. Prices are better than the other two stores.
A & A Aquatics - Route 4 Fort Lee just before the GWB - avoid at all costs. Real Dump
Conclusions imho:
Dry goods - Reef Encounters
Corals - Absolutely Fish
Fish - Reef Encounters or Absolutely Fish

Eagle Reefs - Hillborough
Well... I just got back from Eagle Reefs and met Bob. His store is gorgeous. Now granted... I personally have not been in many marine based stores but this store was just amazing. The colors in his corals and fish were so very impressive. He was also very willing to answer any questions I had. The equipment that he is using for his store and provides for his customers was also quite impressive.
If you haven't been there yet, you outta go. Really worth the trip.

Someone like to save me some time and tell where is THE BEST reef fish store in NJ? My friend and I drove all the way out to Lancaster, PA to check out 'the mecca of all fish stores' and to be honest, we were disappointed. I thought ABSOLUTELY FISH in Clifton was simply the best yet, but still wanted to know of any other jems of stores out there. Tired of walking in to places and seeing sick little clowns and stupid staff members.

anyone going to eagle reef systems in hillsborough DO NOT USE the yahoo map, it gives the address of the old location that is closed down and not even there anymore. check the eagle reef website for the new address. I learned the hard way.
Just came from Fish Town in Ramsey, North Jersey.
Nice selection of corals. Everything looks heathly. Friendly and knowledgabe staff. Lots of rics, sps, lps etc. Really nice frag tank too.
Relative to the other stores in north jersey, I must say......Fish Town has some really great prices :) I would highly recommend checking out this store for those in the area.

Absoulutly Fishy can say good by to my 1,000 doller budget.
I went to Aquatic Obession today and Will was a very nice person to talk to..The store also has very competitive prices to online store and he could get anything you want..So deff should check it out..

It is good to have an alternative to Absolutely Fish close by.

I reccomend Underwater World in Roselle Park. Very small store but the guy knows what he's talking about. He has some beatiful reef tanks with great colors. All of his fish are healthy, quality specimens and he won't sell you a fish that isn't. If you need any info, he's the guy to talk to. In the past he's had some amazing stuff like a Scorpion, and he now has a Rockfish.
Absolutely Fish is a good place to find exotic stuff. The staff isn't the smartest in the world and the prices are high, but it's not like I'm paying for it anyway. I'm only 14, my dad is the one who was the wallet. They have some rare stuff. They get Conspicuous, Adult Emperor, and Personifier Angels quite a bit. They're newly set-up reef is great too. Geez, those metal halides are hot. :eek1:
Tropiquarium is also a good place. Their display tanks are breathtaking. They have 2 SW displays that about 550 gallons each, and some really cool FW displays. They get some nice fish in aswell, and some nice corals. Nice place overall.

Jesse -KT. For a 14 year old, you write and express yourself better than many adults I know- nice post.
Absolutely Fish is a great store to look at livestock; their prices are a real turnoff though. For dry goods only in ab absolute emergency should one go there. Their help can be extremely knowlegable or you can feel blown off, depending on how busy they are, who the salesperson is... etc..

Definitely. They sell everyday stuff for a lot more than other places. Getting correct information with the staff is hit or miss. You either run into a guy who nows his stuff, or someone who is simply guessing by the looks of the fish. More likely the latter. Surprising, as I believe a Marine Biologist runs that place. Usually my father and I go there to look. I would only buy there if it was something that you don't see everyday.

Small store with not a large number of tanks however I do concur that this has to be one of the best kept secrets. Each of his tanks are in great shape with great care taken to the inhabitants. He also, over the course of time, has a great variety of different things. It is always a treat to stop down and not know what you may run into.....

I agree, he knows what he's doing, and all of his fish are top notch. My father and I have recently bought some corals for our nano, a torch, a clam, and uhhh, I don't now the name of the other one. He said that if it weren't for corals, he'd be out of business. He gives some great advice, and he's always the guy to go to if your in need of advice.

Absolutely Fish is way over priced, they where good but now there are slacking, Where you suggest I go? I live in West Orange, Hanover Pet is Awful to. I too live in West Orange and agree with statements regarding Absolutely Fish. I love going there just to look but I never buy as their prices are astronomical. Aarons Aquarium on Stuyvesant in union is a good place. They keep good care of their tanks and have a nice selection. As someone else mentioned they also hand pick all of their specimens. Where can I get information regarding the NJ Reefers Club?

I guess you can't go wrong with absolutely fish. Some say their prices are a little high. I don't think their prices are that far off from other LFS's it depends on what you are getting. For quality I'd rate them rather high. I must admit though I haven't shopped at too many places to compare them to. Maybe three or four other shops. I guess I need to checkout underwater world also.

I bought some stuff off this guy on eBay, He is in NNJ and has a place you can go to just email him first to let him know. So far it is the best place I found in New Jersey for Coral, very fair on pricing (he has everything from nano on up to the big boys) and his shipping is also very fair (not like others trying to get 45 bucks out of you to send a small box) I said I was going to do FOLR and now I keep buying more Coral...lol Check him out here.

I stopped by Altis reef today and I have one word to describe the experience. Awesome! I spent nearly two hours in the place and would have stayed longer except I had another appointment. I have never seen a place like it. It isn't a store it is a farm. Setup is awesome and the frags are great. I purchased seven differnt pieces and all have opened up and look great in my tank. I highly recommend it and if you can go there you will not be disappointed. It's located in Hackensack. I can't say enough good things about it. I now know where I'll do ALL of my coral shopping.

I don’t recommend to many places due to things going wrong in the past but this place is well worth the trip… I'll never forget the first frag I bought in NJ it only had 3 or 4 polyps and I paid 25 bucks for it at a LFS, It died in 3 days :( So far everything I got from Rob has been growing steady and looking healthy:)

They have a great selectionf corals from the basic soft stuff to pretty unique chalices. A wide variety of supplies from dog and cat to a good variety of lizard and snake supplies. Fish...so/so, bbut corals are worth a trip. Call first and see if they are stocked.

So any recommendations? I live near aquatic visions (east hanover pet), and they dont have much, and most the staff act like its a horrible thing to talk to you. This is not a list of recommended stores (lord knows there are stores listed that I won't set foot in) but just a list of stores that carry saltwater fish & corals. The Petco in Somerville is said to be an anomaly of the usual Petcos and that's why that particular store is listed.

George, JB Tropical is much smaller than Aquarium Center. They don't have much in terms of corals. The fish prices were descent when I was there, they are usually selling smaller fish. I had bought a YWG and it was cheap but it was also 1". But the last few times I was there, they didn't have many of the fish listed. Maybe I was there just before an order was coming in. I'd recommend calling before going, if you're looking for a certain fish. They do sell more than just fish.

I was just wondering because I've never been there before. It's close enough for me to pop in and take a look around. Would be nice if they carried blackworms because AC tends to run out of them every once in a while and my fish have to eat frozen for a few days. :uhoh2:
I prefer smaller fish actually, so it might be worth checking out.

Not surprising at all. I haven't been in there in about a year, and hadn't bought anything there for the year before that. Just horribly mis-managed. Really leaves the central/western part of Morris county without a SW LFS I think.

It still amazes me that there is only one SW LFS between Clifton and the Delaware Water gap along the Rt 80 corridor. You can't swing a dead cat in central NJ without hittting an LFS. Why?

I've been asking that question for years, Jeff.
I just got back from East Hanover to see who might be hanging around at Aquatic Visions, and it was just a couple of guys in there tearing up carpeting. I have to say I'm not 100% convinced the place is history. There were still tanks visible with running lights and fish in them. This may be some sort of monumental renovation (the place was a bit of dump), or the place was sold (hallelujah!) and it may come back as something slightly different. Odd part is there was a bunch of brand new, bigger tanks standing in the front corner, still in the packing?
I had heard some rumors about a very high-end store opening in Livingston this past fall, but obviously it's either stalled or in trouble of some sort.

I WISH THERE WAS A STORE IN NJ besides AF that was halfway decent.
AF has great fish selection, corals barely any to speak of.
Aquatic Visions is a DUMP way overpriced and just EHH its like if you're driving on a highway and see a dirty outhouse and really have to go to the bathroom. You don't want to use it, but you kind of have to.
It sucks sucks sucks having to drive either all the way down to AO or Manhattan Aquariums in NY. :sigh: A boy can dream, I'd open my own store, but lack the experience and financing heh

It would be nice if Jeff bought the place again and brought it back to life. Remember those days Angelo? When Hanover Pet had every type of livestock you could want or dream of, rare fish, beautiful corals and solid no BS advice.
The place you're thinking of is in Short Hills. It's had paper on the windows for months claiming "Aquatic Studio is coming soon". I've heard rumors about the place and who is going to run it. If they're true it could be a nice store and right down the road from my inlaws to boot.

Jeff was bit of a PITA at times, but looking back I have to agree with you Jeff, it was 1000% better then and he ran the place like a LFS. The people he sold it to just used it as a glorified depository of livestock for maintenance accounts. It was really horrible to watch at times. Livestock would come in on Tuesday mornings. I mean dozens of boxes! By Wednesday afternoon it was all boxed up again to stuff into some huge display at a maintenance account. The stuff would be so stressed by that time, we all called these accounts "graveyards". Over time the new maintenance accounts and displays started petering out and they couldn't/wouldn't pay suppliers. They ended up with just one wholesaler that would sell anything to them. I hadn't been there in almost a year.
I just got an email from Warren, and he confirmed the owners' are closing the place down.
I didn't know the name, but I knew it was near the Short Hills Mall, so that has to be it. From what I knew of it, it's a couple of months behind schedule.

So what stores are left around Livingston
I work in Parsippany and Hanover Pet was about it. With them gone, I'm gonna say Absolutely Fish is the closest. Such a sad story with HP. The guys that bought the place from Jeff just refused to run it like store and put nothing into the place after the first year. They had no idea how big of a geographical area they covered and really didn't care.
Fwiw, I was at absolutely fish wednesday. I hadn't been there in a year or so. As usual, the place was very well stocked and lots of people shopping there. But I think the prices got worse. Every tank gave me sticker shock. $150 for a 4 inch or so orange cap.??? Yeah, I walked out empty-handed.
The Elos store that's supposed to open some time this year in Livingston, looks like it's going to be more of an "Elos boutique" and less of an LFS.

I could be wrong, but there isn't a store selling SW beyond bare minimums and essentials from Clifton all the way to Tannersville, Pa. along the I80/Rt46 corridor and for several miles north and south of those two roads. With the Elos store in Livingston looking pretty exclusive, I'm not expecting that to change.

Between Clifton and PA I can only think of Hackettstown Pet and Dover Pet. I'm not sure if Dover pet even sells coral anymore. I haven't been to HP in years. The last time I was there is mostly soft coral and the usual LPS, in any color you wanted as long as you wanted green.

Jeff, Those are the places I kind of lumped into the "bare minimums and essentials" category. I was in Dover about a year ago and it looked like he hadn't changed the bulbs over the one and only tank with corals in 5 years. But they do have supplies and dry goods if you can't wait, etc. There's also a store in Newton on Route 206 (name escapes me) that falls into that category as well. Even though my oldest daughter graduated from Centennary, I've never been to Hackettstowm pet. But being a Main St. storefront, I would bet they are in that category as well. In a nutshell, none are worth a 30 minute drive if you're looking for an assortment of livestock, but may have drygoods you need in a pinch. I haven't been to Adam's in Chester in quite a few years, so honestly, I can't comment on that one, but possibly someone else can comment there.

In Ocean township, across the street from bigger but not better Tropiquarium, is a place called ultimate reefs. He has a good salt water fish assortment and very good coral selections. It is a small store but expand their inventory every week. Greg is the guy you wanna see there. Very helpful and not too expensive.
I'm gonna check out the captivating coral store. I didn't know that place exsisted

ultimate reefs used to be called reef 2 reptiles. He got rid of his reptiles, so hence the name change. I've only heard great things about Greg.
CC is a great small store.

any stores that sell oddball fish and a nice variety of eels?

Beitals is in Pearl River NY just across the NJ border (last exit on GSP) It's a little difficult to find since it is in an industrial complex but has a huge selection of FW fish (largest selection of african cichlids outside of a fish farm I have ever seen) and a decent selection of SW Fish. They usually have around a dozen or so different eels in stock. He has plenty of oddball fish but they are mostly fresh water. If they don't have it they can definitely get it and the prices are reasonable.

They have a new fish guy in the store and the manager has given the kid some money to stock the tanks himself. He also does alot of special ordering. They had a difficult past. However, I think they may be on the up and up. They sell everything from puppiues to freshwater fish food.

I was there a few weeks ago and was very disappointed in their selection. Tanks looked very dirty and overgrown with algae, fishes weren't in great shape. Morris county definitely needs a nice reef store.

Ely's is great for freshwater fish, he's got everything under the sun. But for saltwater his selection is almost nothing and his prices are sky high.

There's a new store called
The Fish Hut
114 Route 46 East
Saddle Brook, NJ
Aquarium Paradise aka Aquascape Online their more well known online presence.
234 Washington Street
Belleville, NJ
The fish hut opened this week and they said they will have a saltwater section set up within the month. Aquarium Paradise has a 34 (?) Red Sea Max for coral frags and has tanks of common s/w fish. The owner said he's expanding the coral selection.
Some places to check int eh near months.

Also in the central area in Avenel, a lfs called Aquatic Obsession, you can get their address online. It's not a big store, but they have a lot of rare frags, colonies, fish, equipment, and other items. Prices are reasonable, I go there a lot. If its not to far from anyone check them out...

I've been there before but that was before I set up my current s/w tank.
I use to work in Iselin and that was a close drive, now that I'm in Union I don't get to head down there that often.

Hey everyone. I know I know .. this post is old, but being new to the hobby, I figured I would give it a bump and add one of my favorite stores to the list.
Fin City - Sparta, New Jersey
Smaller place, but good prices on maintenance goods (especially for the location) Very well kept tanks and prices on live stock are decent too! Definitely worth stopping in. From North Jersey.

You are in a tough place for this hobby. Allquatics on South Broad St in Hamilton would be the closest, but its not exactly a good place. They hit sometimes, but are mostly a miss. If you head into PA, there is Fish Factory in Bristol, and The Hidden Reef right up the rd in Levittown. Hidden Reef is probably the best dry goods place, and Fish Factory usually has a better selection of livestock. The live stock at HR is questionable at best and I would highly recommend not buying anything alive there. FF has some of the highest prices on dry goods around. So a trip to both places might be worth it.
I'm in Bordentown and usually find that it is well worth the money to take the trip up to Aquatics Obsession in Avenel, or out to Ocean to visit Tropiquarium and Aquarium Care Center. All three are excellent on the Livestock side both coral and fish. AO is probably the most rounded of the 3 as being reef related but dry goods can be a bit on the high side. ACC is only a reef store but seem to concentrate more on livestock.
Hope that helps

I would stay away from Trop, their fish looked unhealthy and was not impressed. They do have a wide selection of dry goods though.
Aquarium Care Center had lot of corals for good prices, fish selection was a bit low, but they were having a huge sale.
Will at Aquatic Obesssion is a good guy and they are pretty decently priced as far as corals. Fish they have a good selection and everything looks healthy.

Aquatic Obsessions in Avenel, This store is worth the visit. Animals & Things on rt 9 is closed, but aquatic is right down the road.
