Hydor Koriala Powerhead

Well, I just ordered a Koriala #4, their largest model avalable that is supposed to put out 1,200gph. My question to you is, does it live up to these spec's? Any mods/improvements to it that will make it perform better?

Fishboy1230 10/16/2007 08:16 PM

?

Koralia 4

I've got a pair of them running in fresh water in my 210g while it sits in the garage. It's sort of their "job interview" so to speak. I've got to say that I'm really pretty impressed with them so far and I have no complaints. They are on either end of a 7' tank and the water is actually mixing in the center. I don't know of any modifications to them but for the price and having witnessed them in action for several months at my LFS, I'd say they are worth the money.

USC-fan 10/16/2007 09:10 PM

I think they put out more than 1200 gph. The new ones now comes with nice flow adapters. Huge improvement to the flow!!!

Fishboy1230 10/17/2007 02:44 PM

I hope mine comes with the flow adapters!

USC-fan 10/17/2007 02:48 PM

i brought my k4 off some guy on ebay for $45 and it came with them

jade2122 10/17/2007 04:52 PM

I have 3 #4's on my 65 and I couldn't be happier, I do have them on a wakemaker so it does cause them to be noisey at start up but for what I got for the low price no complaints! I would recommend these to anyone.

hipertec 10/17/2007 08:00 PM

I do like the K4 pumps but was told that the Gulfstream IIs and Sureflow Maxijet mods puts way more flow than the K4s.
can anyone else varify?

sohal1025 10/17/2007 08:09 PM

I myself are not too fond of that powerhead(not for my needs). It seems that it does not blow the current out directly in front of the unit but to the sides then forward,(if you could understand that) There seems to be a dead spot directly in front. The output seems to have alot of volume though..

They have a flow adapter that fixes this problem. With the adapter its more like a stream. Huge improvement IMO!!!

so with the adapter, do you think it will reach the center of a 6ft tank?
or do you think a MJ mod would do better for a 180 gallon?

Fishboy1230 10/18/2007 08:15 PM

Fedex says the magical date of arrival is 10/20, can't wait!

customanimalart 10/19/2007 03:10 PM

Are these the ones with that extra plastic part? I can't figure out how to install it. ??? My first 2 k's did not have this.

barngeatbayman 10/19/2007 07:33 PM

to install line the notches up with the front of the powerhead and snap them into place. They snap inside the housing hope this helps.

customanimalart 10/19/2007 11:11 PM

I thought that was how they installed, but I couldn't figure out how they snapped in. I guess I will try again. It isn't even in the instructions.
Do you know if they are universal and fit all 4 sizes? I could use them in my display tank more than my frag tank.

Fishboy1230 10/21/2007 08:45 AM

I don't know if they are universal, but to intall it there is a plastic circle/strainer that slides into a larger ring that when slowly and accuratly put on the output of the pump will fit snuggly.

oh and IMO I love this pump!

customanimalart 10/21/2007 02:09 PM

Okay. According to you there is a "larger ring" involved? I believe I have the little strainer thing, but no ring. I will get a picture up of what I have to see if it is even the same piece. Then go from there. Thanks

customanimalart 10/21/2007 02:15 PM

Nevr mind just yet. I got my box out and found the pieces (strainer and ring...they were stuck together) and noticed that installation is shown in the picture. I will give it a try and holler if I need help. =)

rkelman 10/21/2007 02:23 PM

I like mine. I can't wait to phase out the rest of my MJ1200's.

customanimalart 10/21/2007 02:25 PM

Got it!
I remember that I was trying to install it on the inside rather than the outside. DUH!

They are great. Too bad they ar a bit pricey. I think that I need one more yet. The 1's and 2's just arent strong enough for my 55g frag tank. I may need to add a 3 right in the center or something.

Fishboy1230 10/22/2007 02:37 PM

I love it, i had to aim it up even more to stop the sand from moving in a 120g cichlid tank!

customanimalart 10/22/2007 02:42 PM

That is the hardest part about these powerheads. I took mine down to clean them and had the toughest time finding the same spot and angle for them so they didn't blow the sand around.

That is my only complaint about them. But I really like them alot. All of my corals get enough circulation and my fish love it!

ROB2005 10/22/2007 03:29 PM

Pricey? I only paid 30 for them at my LFS *major discount day* They don't shoot water like a jet, but they do push a lot of it around.

seagirl 10/22/2007 04:37 PM

i ordered 2 of the #4's back in march, they didn't come with the added plastic part. Is there any way to get them to send them to you or do you have to buy them? Seems like if they modded it they should send out free ones to those who purchased before they corrected it.

Compared to other powerheads, like the maxi-jet at 12.00, yeah, that is pricey. For me that is.:D I paid 30.00 for my K1 and 45 for my K4.

Seagirl- Maybe someone should see if they will send out those pieces to modify our powerheads.

I think they should. Has anyone out there tried to get one? I know tons of people on this board have them. If not, who should we try and contact? They don't have a forum here do they?

weaselslucks 10/22/2007 07:28 PM

i've tried a few different powerheads in my tank and all of them seem to clog. some more then others. I cant wait for christmas and2 #4's

customanimalart 10/22/2007 07:54 PM

May just have to go to Koralia's website and check.

K4

I received the two K4's I ordered a couple of weeks ago. Along with them I also ordered an Ocean Pulse Quadra Wavemaker timer. I already had two MJ1200 Mods running. While the K4's do not put out as much flow as the MJ1200 Mods, I am extremely happy with the combination of the MJ's and the K4's on this Wavemaker. I have them set so the MJ's are on three minutes and off three minutes, and the K4's are on six minutes and off six minutes. With an MJ and K4 at each end of the tank, with this timing sequence, the flow is incredible to say the least. I thought the MJ's were doing a pretty good job, but the addition of the K4's and the wavemaker showed me quite a few "dead" spots as the crud started getting stirred up .........

customanimalart 10/22/2007 09:55 PM

I read somewhere that the motors for the K's can burn out from being turned on/off so often using wavemakers. Have you noticed any problems using one? I have one but don't have my k's hooked up to it for this reason.

USC-fan 10/22/2007 10:25 PM

If any one finds out how to buy the flow adapter please post!!

Seconded!!!

I have had a K4 since they first came out and have been happy with it. I would love to see what this adapter can do though. If anyone has info on how to get my hands on it please post.

For the OP there is a mod on these powerheads using a maximod propeller that people claim puts out over 2000 gals/hr. I haven't tried it but it seemed fairly simple if you have a maxijet on hand.

madadi 10/22/2007 11:32 PM

while cleaning mine i broke the impeller shaft by mistake and i contacted them. they sent me 4 for free and i didn't even pay shipping. their customer service is great. i think you guys should stop being scared and contact them and see what happens. worst thing that can happen is they say no :D

and yes, i love my Ks, i have two and want to get two more in my 90 to blow behind the rock work.

spreston 10/23/2007 09:11 AM

customanimalart-No, the adapters are not universal. I just picked up another #3 & #4 about a month ago and thought I would stick the adapter that came with the #3 on my old #4, didn't work when looking at the two adapters side by side there is a noticeable size diference.

customanimalart 10/23/2007 01:33 PM

I believe that I will contact them to get the modded part. WML!
