Using Well Water

I was wondering if anyone has used filtered well water sucessfully in reef tank. If so did you have to use a iron removal, softner, or any other similar systems before your ro or di resin?

just get a good ro/di system and be prepared to change your filters on a regular basis. Monitor your water with a tds meter...relativley cheap...and change as needed. My water is horrible and I have to change filters every 3-4 months. RO filter probably every year.

I was using my well water durring my new tank start up/cycling. I couldnt understand why my nitrates/nitrites were so high, I tested the water from the tap and found they were off the chart! I now use a sedament prefilter, booster pump to 60 PSI, carbon prefilter, 2 X75gpd ro membranes, 2 X DI resins then one more carbon block. 285 to 300 TDS on inlet, 0 to 1 TDS on out let. Well,Well worth it! Tank is doing great!!!

I use well water and a typhoon III RODI. I change the DI resin about 3 times a year and the other micron filters about once a year. TDS stays at 0-10 depending on how close an eye i keep on it.

Well Water here as well.

8ppm out of the RO, and 0-3ppm out of the DI, I have to change it every other month... (the DI that is)

Well water for 10 yrs, same as others; RO/DI and change resin every 4 months or so.

mborkush, are you near an old dairy farm or something? I wouldn't drink your tap water without treating it, its likely there is, er... contamination if your nitrates are high.

the water will end up being one of the least expensive parts of this hobby. For the money that it costs to get ro/di water and the headache you can avoid its well worth it. A bad choice in water could be detrimental to you whole aquarium. If you want to waste your money, ill send ya my paypal address haha. But definitly go with ro/di if you can bud, you will thank yourself for spending the money.
