92G Corner Tank Build Log

I purchased this tank on craigslist. Wanted to share my build with everyone. My plan is to sand, refinish the stand and canopy, and paint white. I will re-hinge the stand and canopy cabinet doors.

Original Picture:

It came with a bunch of live rock, really small sump, oversized external pump, small no name skimmer, and VHO lights with an IceCap Ballast. I decided to buy all new equipment.

My Experience:
This is my second salt tank, my first one was a 55g tank, I had T-5 lighting and mostly SPS coral. Unfortunately I had to sell it a couple years ago due to a move.

The Plan on the new one:
Going to have a mixed tank long term but SPS in the beginning. I will run ZeoVit from the start on this tank. Going to do LED only from the start. I may add a T-5s later depending on how my PAR and shimmer looks with just LED. I am lucky as I have a closet behind the tank. I will share pictures of the entire process.

Equipment List:

BlueLine External pump. (Will Update Later today on specs)
APEX CONTROLLER SYSTEM - NEPTUNE SYSTEMS (Preordered, hopefully will get this week)
SENEYE REEF MONITOR
UP34 SUMPRO SUMP - SKIMZ
SKIMZ KONE SK201 INTERNAL PROTEIN SKIMMER
2X KESSIL A360W LEDs
2X VORTECH MP40WQD Pumps
OSMOLATOR UNIVERSAL AUTO TOP OFF - TUNZE
BRS BULK KALKWASSER STARTER PACKAGE
ZeoVit STARTER PACKAGE
1/2 GALLON - BRS BULK PREMIUM ROX 0.8 CARBON
SALIFERT MAGNESIUM AQUARIUM TEST KIT
40 LB. SPECIAL GRADE ARAG-ALIVE! REEF SAND
Sea Side Aquatics / Bubble Magus Zeovit Reactor 1.5L

Yesterday, first coat:

Painted the back of the tank with Rust-oleum black semi gloss:

Here is the tank ready to be plumbed as of last night:

I will be working on the plumbing tonight. More updates to come this week. Let me know if you have any comments or requests.

That all cleaned up nicely, good looking tank.

Are the mp40's going to force it away from the wall a bit? Doesn't look like there's room for them where it sits in the photo.

Are you using the old rock too or is that all being replaced?

Good question. I freaked out about this after I set it up. Thought it wasn’t going to work but it ended up being fine. With the molding and how the stand was made the gap is not too bad. The stand is 1 3/8" from the wall and the tank sits 2 1/8" from the wall. Definitely tolerable.

Here is a closer picture.

For the rock, I plan on using his. He has some really nice pieces. I have been soaking them in 1 part vinegar and 4 parts RO water with a two cap full of bleach for about a week. Later this week I will take them out, brush them off with a nylon brush, rinse, and leave out in the sun for a few hours.

Wouldn’t let me edit the original post, the external pump is a BlueLine 40 X, 130w 1270 GPH.

I started the plumbing tonight, ran out of blue pipe. Amazon to the rescue. Should get it tomorrow.

Here is inside the closet under the stairs. I didn’t plan on using this many elbows but i didn’t want to go from the pump straight up to the return with a tee, was afraid it would just blow past the tee and not go down the straight pipe I’m going to install tomorrow. Good news is this pump is strong so it shouldn’t be an issue. We will see, if it’s an issue with flow I will redo it later.

I will post some more pictures tomorrow when it’s all together.

Blue Pipe is late!

USPS delay, hoping to get the blue pipe today to finish the sump.

Tank is up and running, day 4 of Zeovit. Still a little cloudy, prob due to the cured rock.

Here are the Kessils and my Superbright Halo moonlight LEDS.

The tank is coming along really nicely. Looking forward to seeing what you do with this tank.

oh, no. Having an issue. Need your help. I am experiencing a real bad brown algae spout. Im in day 9 of Zeovit 14 day cycle, started experiencing it in day 4. I know i did a couple things wrong now after reading the ZeoVit forum, hopefully you can help me through it.

What I know I did wrong:
1. Used Live sand
2. Used rock I cured, wasnt new rock.
3. I think I may have overdosed Zeostart after day 4.

Here is what I did and where im at.

Here is a picture of the tank as of today, I am not going to dose ZeoStart tonight and I am thinking of keeping the lights off tomorrow.

Here is a pic of my sump to see my Zeo Reactor

What do you guys recommend to get me back on track?
