Looks bad to me... gorilla crab or stone crab maybe?
Hairy legs and black claws are usually a sign of bad things to come. HTH -- Kevin |

In the first pic, the claws look to have 'flat' not pointy ends. This is usually the sign of a plant eater, not a predator. I'd get him out anyways. I hate crabs.......

Zeppelin is correct, if he has flat ends on his claws, he eats algea and is helping to clean your tank.
Can't tell for sure from the pic, but I would leave him alone if this is the case.

Crabs are kewl!
He doesn't look nasty to me.
If you haven't added anything in a long time, and nothing looks any worse the wear, I'd let him be for the time being. He will be easy enough to trap (shrimp in a glass trick) if you notice any issues. I was confronted with a similar decision maybe a year ago (I was doing some rearranging and encountered a small crab under a rock with a very similar appearance), left him be to roam, and have noticed absolutely no ill effects. |

The only thing I have go on was in within the last week one of my milliporas lost some tissue, but the way it is coming off I dont think its the crab. I sent the pics to wetwebmedia and see if they have any comment. Thanks for all the input

I found a similar crab this weekend. I was cleaning my skimmer pump, so I took the pump out and dropped it in a bucket of warm tapwater with some vinegar to run it. For some reason I took the pump back out (within like 20 seconds), turned it over and the crab was hiding on the bottom side. +
I put him back in the fuge, nothing there he can hurt. I am not sure if he made it through as he has not been seen since, but if he does he's a real trooper! |
