A Happy Ending
If you're like me, you have read enough tank crash stories to make you a paranoid mess, so here's a story with a happy ending:
I asked Sue at MO to let me know if she ever got a Mandarin that was eating frozen food, because at the time I had only a 40 gallon tank, although I also had a seasoned refugium in my sump. One day she showed me a male Green Mandarin that was scarfing down enriched brine shrimp and I brought him home. This was about six months ago and he quickly became a favorite fish and has stayed fat and happy ever since. Around February 1, I noticed that one of his eyes was covered over in white and a little research indicated that it was popeye caused by a bacterial infection following an injury. No possibility of catching him to treat with antibiotics so I figured since his appetite was good and he was otherwise perfectly healthy, I left him alone to battle the infection on his own. There was never any indication that he was bothered by this and he never stopped hunting pods. Today, nearly all of the eye is visible again, with just a very thin film on a small portion of the eyeball. It looks like he will be fully recovered in another day or so. |
