My Shallow Reef

I’m trying to tweak the dosing pump so that I can drip in a gallon of Kalkwasser two or three times a week. Would like to keep Alk between 7 and 8.

I stopped carbon dosing now that Nitrate has settled in at 5. Think I got some cyano from the carbon dosing.
Got rid of it by suctioning during water change and a course of chemiclean.

Orange leptastrea an encrusting sps coral. Underrated coral, in my opinion.

The Frag tank is not really photogenic right now. I don’t have any fish in there yet, so there is no steady nutrient source. I have three Mocha Clownfish left, so I’m going to transfer those over. I’ve been dragging my feet on moving them because there is no lid and I’m worried about jumping. Also a little concerned they may not like the high flow in there.

colonies are really filling in. looking great! Also, can you verify what you are keeping your ALK at?

Thank you for the kind words. The tank is Innovative Marine SR-80. Its an all in one tank, so the sump is actually a narrow compartment in the back of the tank. There is a drain on each end and the water goes through felt socks, then a ghost skimmer. I've got a mesh bag of half a cup of carbon and a tablespoon of Phosgaurd (which is way less than the recommended amount) so that just runs passively. I leave the mesh bag in there for about ten days, take it out and I refresh once a month. Then a heater and two Eheim return pumps. I'll try to take a pic of the sump but its so narrow and small there's not much to see. The returns both split, and I run four spinstream rotating devices and that helps give some random flow to the tank. I've also got two MP10's, one on each end but the right one is not working at the moment. Always something to fix, lol.

I'll try to do a quick video of the whole tank this week. Full tank shots don't seem to show it very well.

I was battling high nutrients a few months ago and I started dosing bacteria, MB7, vibrant, and carbon dosing with NoPox. This all worked to reduce Nitrate down to 5 or less, but it left me with cyano. I've been trying to vacuum it out with water changes but its been resiliant. I just dosed chemiclean, which I think Randy Holmes says is Erythromycin. I took the carbon out, removed the skimmer cup, and put an airstone in the sump to increase oxygenation. So far it seems to have worked. Just have to see if it stays gone.

Thanks buddy! The tank was in a slump at the end of last year and now its on the rebound.
I've been keeping Alk between 7.5 and 8.5. It was 7.8 this morning, and I've got the dosing pump so it doesn't quite keep up with demand. Then every two or three days when it drops some, I'll drip in a gallon of Kalkwasser at night. I like the pH raising effects of Kalwasser and I'm acutally thinking about adding in a Kalkstirrer just for the evenings but I thing that may cause me to need a controller. I've been putting off getting a controller cause I'm a little afraid of them, lol.

I was reading recently that ALK useage in the tank increases significantly during the day (especially as PAR peaks during the light cycle) and really diminishes at night. So that dosing schedules might be better served to match these ups and downs. I think that is where a KH director can help but you might be able to set the Doser to deal with this as well.

My Shallow Reef

Okay, I’ve got some crazy plumbing going on now. My wife let me drill a hole in the floor (g-d knows what that will cost me later) and I ran three 1/4” OD polyethylene tubing from the display to the basement. I bought the Litermeter III peristaltic pump with two additional pumps. Line A will pump fresh saltwater into the tank, line B pumps saltwater out of the display, and C will dose Kalkwasser from the Kalkstirrer.

Okay, I got my auto water change set up the day before I left for a two week vacation. Ideally I wouldn’t have cut it so close but shipping delays etc got in the way. I set it to change 3 liters of water a day. Overall I think it worked out well and the tank looked good on my return.

Got home and rigged up the Kalkstirrer. It’s got a magnetic stir rod on the bottom set to stir 5 times a day. Starting out dosing a liter a day of Kalkwasser.
The other nice thing about this is that it will dramatically decrease the need to fill my ATO container.

Very pumped up to see how this affects the tank and coral growth.

Two months in for doing daily auto water change and the tank is looking pretty happy. Also added daily Kalkwasser through Kalkstirrer, so it’s a combination effect. pH has been pretty consistently 8.3 to 8.4.
